Flu Q&A

What is the flu?

The flu, medically called influenza, is a viral infection that affects the upper respiratory system, which includes the nose and throat.

The flu is very contagious and passes from person to person through respiratory droplets that spray into the air when someone with the flu coughs, sneezes, or talks. You catch the flu when you breathe in the germs or touch a surface that has the germs and then touch your face.

In most cases, the flu causes only a mild illness. But it can cause serious illness in young children and older adults.

What are flu symptoms?

Flu symptoms vary and may often resemble a cold. However, with the flu, symptoms develop quickly. Common flu symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Body aches
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Fatigue

You can also have vomiting and diarrhea with the flu, but these symptoms are more often seen in children.

When should I go to urgent care for the flu?

If you suspect you have the flu and want to make sure, you should go to All Valley Urgent Care for an evaluation and testing. If you’re diagnosed with the flu within the first few days of the infection, you may take antiviral medication that can reduce the duration of your infection.

You also need to go to urgent care if you have severe flu-like symptoms, such as a high fever or shortness of breath. The providers at All Valley Urgent Care also recommend children or older adults with flu-like symptoms come in for testing and care.

For your convenience, All Valley Urgent Care offers telemedicine appointments, so you don’t have to come to the office for an evaluation.

What happens during an urgent care visit for the flu?

You can expect a speedy and comprehensive evaluation when you visit All Valley Urgent Care with concerns about the flu.

Your provider reviews your symptoms and when they started. They may do a nasal swab to complete a rapid flu test. All Valley Urgent Care also tests for COVID-19 and strep throat. Depending on your symptoms, your provider may test for these other infections, too.

Once you have a diagnosis, your provider gives you treatment recommendations, including antiviral medications when appropriate.
